Abstract

A composition for the treatment of insect stings comprises a local anaesthetic (e.g. benzocaine) and an anti-histamine (e.g. mepyramine maleate or antazoline hydrochloride) dissolved in a liquid which, when applied to the skin, evaporates rapidly therefrom to produce a subjective cooling effect at least as great as that obtainable with diethyl ether but insufficient to freeze the tissues. The liquid is a liquid or mixture of liquids of the aerosol propellant type of boiling point 0 DEG -30 DEG C., e.g. trichlorofluoromethane. The composition may also contain a further aerosol propellant liquid having a high vapour pressure at atmospheric temperatures, e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane. The composition may also contain cosolvents, e.g. industrial methylated spirits or a mixture of isopropyl alcohol, acetone and propylene glycol. The composition is applied to the skin, preferably from an aerosol spray dispenser.
