<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Compositions and devices for the treatment of insect bites".
The present invention relates to compositions and devices used in the treatment of insect bites,
According to the present invention there is provided a composition for use in the treatment of insect bites, which comprises a local anesthetic and an antihistamine dissolved in a liquid which, when applied to the skin, evaporates rapidly. of it to produce a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cooling effect at least as high as that obtainable with diethyl ether. A common solvent can be provided to facilitate dissolution of the local anesthetic and anti-histamine in the liquid.
In addition, according to the present invention, a device is provided for use in the treatment of insect bites, this device comprising a spray dispenser, containing a composition as defined above.
When the solution is sprayed on the area of the skin which has been stung by a bee, wasp or other insect, the low boiling liquid produces a cooling effect which provides rapid and significant pain relief. . Then, a more prolonged action of relieving the pain and obtained thanks to the local anesthetic. In addition, the anti-histamine works to protect the patient from the likely long-term effects of the sting.
According to a preferred embodiment of the application device, the vaporization distributor can be put into operation to deliver the solution which it contains in the form of a vaporization expelled at least in part by the vapor pressure of the liquid at low boiling point. Therefore, this liquid is preferably a liquid of the type of propellants used with aerosols.
It is desirable to provide the dispenser in the form of an aerosol type dispenser, such dispensers being readily available commercially. An aerosol dispenser releases the liquid as a spray. fine gouelettes from which the liquid constituting the propellant tends to evaporate rapidly. However, by making the dispenser work close to the skin, which is in any case necessary in order to limit the spraying to the area
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
appropriate, the solution is easily deposited with an interesting proportion still present of the liquid.
To be suitable for use as a low boiling point liquid, a liquid constituting a pro. aerosol pulse should not have an atmospheric boiling point, which is so low that it freezes tissue or is difficult to deposit on the skin as a liquid, and this boiling point should not be so high that its evaporation rate is insufficient to provide a desirable degree of cooling.
For best results the atmospheric boiling point should be 0-30 C. A liquid constituting a particularly suitable propellant is trichlorofluoromethane (boiling point 23.8 C). Propellants having atmospheric boiling points in the preferred range have a vapor pressure at room temperature which is too low to operate an aerosol dispenser unaided. For this reason, the propellant is preferably provided in admixture with another propellant having a high vapor pressure at atmospheric pressure, for example dichlorodifluoromethane which boils at -29.8 C to atmospheric pressure.
The use of propellants in admixture to impart a suitable vapor pressure is normal in aerosol art. Substances which, because of their low vapor pressure, cannot usually be used alone as propellants, but which are much less useful for a mixture with propellants of a pressure of up to High fear of forming mixtures with desired properties are themselves considered to be propellants in practice.
Just like the propellants of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
high vapor pressure such substances are usually chlorofluorinated hydrocarbons, in particular methanes and chlorofluorinated ethanes.
If the device is used in such a way that some of the second propellant reaches the skin in a liquid state, it serves to increase the cooling action.
The following examples are given to further illustrate the invention.

Used to subject insect stings to vaporization, in particular bee stings: and wasp? the device provides quick pain relief and additionally gives long-term action.
In a series of tests volunteers were injected with histamine and the injection sites were sprayed using the device according to the invention. The reduction in the height of the marks or stretch marks, which can be attributed to spraying, clearly shows an exceptionally high degree of antihistamine activity.

When used to vaporize insect bites, the device gives the results as described in Example 1. However, using isopropyl alcohol and acetone, as well as propylene. glycol together as a common solvent in place of industrial denatured alcohol, it has been found that any tendan of the composition to react with the varnish provided on the interior of the dispenser is substantially removed. From an experiment with the composition given in Example 1, it appeared that such a reaction could lead to precipitation of mepyramine maleate.
It will be understood that antihistamines, local anesthetics, low boiling point liquids, common solvents and propellants, other than those specified herein by way of example, may be employed, if you prefer. Another anti-histamine of particular interest is autajolin hydrochloride.
