Abstract

1,087,224. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Oct. 21, 1964 [July 23, 1963; Feb. 7, 1964], Nos. 29022/63 and 5289/64. Heading A3B. A heel and lasting machine includes a pair of wipers arranged for advancing and closing movement, a support for the last and pneumatic means for raising the support, the shoe being urged towards the wipers solely by means of air under pressure while the wipers perform their wiping action. The last L is supported on a jack post 4 in a jack 1 which can be swung about a pivot 6, from a forward loading position to an operative position in which the shoe engages a heel band (not shown), by a pneumatic piston and cylinder 13. The jack post 4 is raised by a thrust diaphragm 43 which acts on a plate 141, when air under pressure is supplied to chamber 133, to raise a thrust rod 143 which in turn raises the jack post 4. A hold-down 8 positions the shoe with respect to the wipers (not shown). The machine includes an automatic pneumatic control circuit which can be set to perform either a two stroke wiping cycle in which the wipers are advanced and closed twice or a four stroke wiping cycle. In operation after loading the shoe on the jack 1 the operator depresses a treadle 5 to a first position which causes the jack to swing to its operative position, quickly at first and then slowly so that the shoe does not contact the heel-band too violently and just before the shoe contacts the heel band causes the jack to be raised until the shoe contacts the hold down. At this stage the cylinder 13 and thrust diaphragm 43 are operated by air at low pressure so that the operator may adjust the position of the shoe and release of the treadle 5 will cause the jack to be lowered. Depression of the treadle 5 to its second position then causes air under high pressure to act on the diaphragm 43 and piston and cylinder 13, the heel band clamps the shoe and the wipers advance and close two or four times as desired. At the completion of the final stroke of the wipers the hold down 8 is retracted and tacks are driven into the margin of the upper. Before the wipers are retracted the heel band releases the shoe and the jack post presses the shoe against the wipers with full bedding pressure. The jack post 4 is then lowered and the jack 1 swings to its loading position, the wipers are retracted and the machine comes to rest.
