Abstract

A method of coating a substrate with a non-porous layer of plastics comprises throwing the plastics material onto the substrate by means of a gas ionised by an electric arc. One or more additives, e.g. metallic, vitreous, enamel, glass, ceramics, may be used conjointly with the plastics. A carrier gas may be supplied to the electric arc and the plastics, with or without additives, is supplied at the end of the resultant plasma flame. The plastics, may be supplied in a direction which is at an angle of from 10 DEG to 30 DEG with the normal to the longitudinal axis of the plasma flame. The distance between the plasma flame and the substrate may be such that the particles of plastics are molten when they impinge on the substrate. The plastics may be supplied at one point and another plastics or an additive is supplied at one or more other points. The different components may be supplied to the plasma flame at different angles to the longitudinal axis of the plasma flame. The substrate may be cleaned by a conventional method, e.g. metals by sandblasting or by acid liquors, prior to being coated. The carrier gas may be nitrogen, hydrogen, or a rare gas. The substrate may be a corrugated, angular or serrated moulding, irregular surfaces, and parts of apparatus such as pumps or packings, of synthetic thermoplastic or themosetting resins, metals, e.g. steel rod, aluminium sheet, steel sheet, T-section steel, porous or non porous ceramics, glass, artificial or natural stone, concrete or wood. Specified plastics are polyethylene, polystyrene and polycaprolactam.
