Abstract

1,087,118. Cutting apparatus. PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO. Inc. April 22, 1965 [July 2, 1964], No. 16912/65. Heading B4B. A rotary spear for cutting paper webs comprises a first rotatably mounted anvil roll 14 with one or more anvil knives 10a, 10b, Fig. 1, adjacent its periphery having a straight cutting edge and a larger, co-operating, higher-speed knife-equipped second roll 15, having a longitudinally-extending slot 23, Fig. 2, for mounting a fly-knife 11, or multiple sets of knives. The slot 23 has at each end a cylindrical enlargement 34, 35, Fig. 8, in each of which is mounted a slotted cylindrical plug 31. A U-shaped knife holder 24 is mounted in the slot 23 and is supported at its ends in the slotted plugs 31. The elongate fly-knife 11 and a shim 29, Fig. 3, are mounted in the holder, the cutting edge of the knife being canted relative to the surface (20, Fig. 8) of the second roll 15 and having a first end 21 higher relative to the surface than the other end 22. Elongate screws are mounted in the second roll normal to the slot, the end screws 36, Fig. 2, bearing against the plugs to confine the flyknife. A pair of screws 38 and washers 38a, Fig. 2, for each cylindrical enlargement adjustably position the associated plug along the axis of the enlargement. The intermediate portion of the holder 24 and the blade 11 are bowed to approach a true helix by five pairs of intermediate opposed screws as at 40, 41, Fig. 3. When setting up the blade, the plugs 31 swivel and align themselves with the bowed blade before the screws 36, 40, 41 are tightened. The blade 11 has chamfered corners and is reversible and provided with four cutting surfaces. In operation of the machine, the web is positioned against the anvil roll 14 by a vacuum port 18.
