Abstract
1,087,073. Street posts. P. W. TURNER. Nov. 6, 1964 [Sept. 11, 1963], No. 35896,63. Heading E1B. A lamp or other roadside tubular post designed to yield on lateral impact by a colliding vehicle is divided at ground level into lower and upper parts 11, 12 secured to flanges 13, 14 held together by four bolts 17 engaging open notches in the flanges. The notches 15 are of 60-degree V shape, Fig. 3 (not shown), so that lateral movement of the part 12 in any direction causes the bolts to ride out of the notches. The frictional resistance to such movement is controlled by a lubricant-coated plastics sheet (not shnwn) between the two parts. U-clips 22 are preferably provided for the bolts 17, and each bolt may be yieldably located (a) by a respective end of a pair of crossed diametrical frangible links (18, Fig. 2, not shown); or (b) an individual washer (Fig. 4, not shown) having frangible locating pins depending into the flange 14; or (c) by modifying the U-shaped clip 22 to include a yieldable locating lug (Fig. 5, not shown). The post may be of steel, aluminium, alloy, wood or resin-bonded glass fibre. The upper part has an access door to electrical control gear, .while the lower part preferably incorporates a switch or disconnecting link to isolate the upper part when moved laterally.
