Abstract
Either (a) formaldehyde or (b) a mixture of formaldehyde and comonomer as a liquid or in solution or suspension in an inert solvent, is continuously introduced into a solution of comonomer in the same or different inert solvent or in the case of (b) a portion of the same or different inert solvent maintained at a temperature between the boiling point of formaldehyde at 80 DEG C. and containing a polymerization catalyst so that solution polymerization takes place. The catalyst may be cationic or anionic, e.g. boron fluoride complexes, tin or titanium tetrachloride, ferric chloride, tri-n-butylamine, di - ethylamine, dimethylaniline, carbodi-imide, aluminium triethyl, butyl lithium, naphthalene sodium, or aluminium diethyl chloride. The comonomer may be an olefin, a vinyl monomer, a diene monomer, a carbonyl monomer, an epoxide or a cyclic formal while the inert solvent may be a liquid hydrocarbon containing from 3 to 10 carbon atoms, or an ether. The catalyst may be added continuously to the reaction either alone or in an inert solvent while the formaldehyde or formaldehyde comonomer mixture either as liquid or solution or suspension may be introduced into a polymerization vessel at the side or bottom and the copolymer formed continuously removed from the bottom. The product may be formed into films, fibres or mouldings.
