Abstract

1,086,928. Castors. F. W. G. GREENER. July 21, 1966 [July 28, 1965], No. 32305/65. Heading A4U. A castor rotatable about a horizontal axis has elements 5 on its surface which are rotatable about radial axes. The elements prevent damage to the carpet when the castor on a chair swings around a vertical axis displaced from the castor axis. The elements 5 may be mushroom shaped as shown or be constituted by balls mounted on the ends of spokes or disposed in a peripheral groove in the surface of the castor. The stem of each mushroom shaped element 5 is rotatably mounted in a bore 3 of the castor and bears against a ball 6 or a ball bearing in the bore. The head of the mushroom shaped element 5 is part spherical and may be made of resilient material which bulges when not under load. A rigid or resilient outer working surface may be secured by an adhesive to the element 5. The body of the castor may be part spherical, or cylindrical or polygonal.
