Abstract
1,086,573. Boring earth &c. E. J. LONGYEAR CO. March 4, 1965 [March 4, 1964], No. 9327/65. Heading E1F. In wire line core barrel apparatus comprising a drill stem 12 carrying a bit 11, and a core receiving tube 15 held in the stem by latches 16, the tube is held spaced from the bit by expandable means 76 housed in a recess 24 in the drill stem. The means 76 comprises a split ring (Fig. 5, not shown) and is retained in the recess by projections 76d on the split ring engaging a ring 77 in the recess. A shoulder 62a on the tube engages the ring 76 to space the tube from the bit, and a shoulder 59 on the tube expands the ring 76 on withdrawal of the tubefrom the stem. The drill stem has a diamond carrying part 19 and hardened lands 22. During drilling the core, the lower part 28 of the tube is stationary, bearings 42, 46 and a grease nipple 41 being provided to reduce friction. Fluid is supplied to the bit along the annulus between the tube and the stem, a by-pass 56, 50, 55 being provided at the recess. When the core fills the tube, washers 45, 48 are expanded to cut-off the fluid, the apparatus is raised slightly to break the core, and the tube is withdrawn by connecting the wire line tool to a spear 72 on the latch release tube 27.
