Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise (a) an alkylaryl sulphonate having a C10-14 alkyl radical, (b) a C12-18 alkylsulphonate derived from a paraffinic kerosene, and (c) a mixture of polyethylene glycol ethers and di- and tert.-butyl phenols. In the example, (a) and (b) are used as sodium salts, and the mixture is a pasty mass which is then dissolved in sea water in an amount of 0.05-0.2 wt. per cent. These detergent compositions may be used to clean the holds of tankers soiled with petroleum or fatty oils, e.g. whale oil, and the resulting emulsion quickly separates into oil and water phases, so that the petroleum or fatty oil can be recovered in useable quantities instead of being discarded.
