1,086,252. Analysis of a mixture of fluid components. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Jan. 27, 1965 [Jan.28, 1964], No. 3501/65. Heading B1L. In the gas chromatographic analysis of a mixture of fluid components at least one of which is selectively sorbed by the solid sorbent and at least one other of which is relatively less sorbed by the sorbent, the sorbent is pretreated by contact with the selectively sorbed component until the sorbent is saturated with this component, then the fluid mixture to be analysed is passed together with a carrier gas through the pretreated sorbent and the effluent is applied to a detector which develops a substantially continuous signal characteristic of the content of selectively sorbed component in the initial mixture, this signal having superimposed on it a discontinuous signal characteristic of the content of the less-sorbed component of the mixture. In the apparatus of Fig. 1, sample valve 10 comprises reciprocable plug 16 having transverse ports 17, 18, 19 and moving between stator plates 11. In the position shown, sample gas stream is flowing from 26 through line 28, port 18 and line 29 while carrier gas is flowing from 32 through line 33, reference detector 36. port 19, column 39 and measuring detector 40. On downward movement of plug 16, port 18 comes into communication with the carrier gas stream and the sample from 18 is swept into column 39. The preferred sorbents are 3A to 7A pore diameter zeolites: others are mentioned. Mixtures analysed may be of hydrocarbons, water with various gases, hydrogen sulphide or mercaptans with various gases, carbon dioxide with various gases, ethylene and propylene or both with various gases, isobutane with one or more C 1 -C 3 , paraffins or mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbons with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.
