Abstract

1,086,205. Magnetic composition. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Oct. 14, 1964 [Oct. 15, 1963], No. 41933/64. Heading H1H. A ferrite material incorporates up to 20% by weight of thoria as a separate phase to improve switching time. The ferrite composition comprises 25-50 mol. % Fe 2 O 3 , 4-67% MnO and may include up to 55 mol. % MgO, up to 15% CdO, up to 30 mol. % CuO, up to 9 mol. % NiO, up to 18 mol. % ZnO, up to 6 mol. % CaO, up to 1À3 mol. % CoO and up to 10 mol. % CrO. In one example (MgMn ferrite) 43À5 gm. MgCO 3 , 46À2 gm. MnCO 3 , 110À3 gm. Fe 2 O 3 and 4% thoria were mixed, dried, calcined at 900‹ C. for 16 hours, ball-milled, mixed with a binder, sieved, dried, pressed into rings, sintered in oxygen for 9 hours at 1350‹ C. and cooled in nitrogen. The inclusion of thoria produced results similar to those obtained by including Pd and/or Pt as disclosed in Specification 1,058,203.
