Abstract

1,085,743. Printing-machines. HARRIS INTERTYPE CORPORATION. March 15, 1966 [March 29, 1965], No. 11302/66. Heading B6C. In a rotary offset printing-machine having a blanket cylinder 11 sheets are fed from a transfer cylinder 13 to the impression cylinder 10 having grippers to grip the leading edge, and thence to a transfer cylinder or delivery drum 14. Three sheet hold-down devices 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> are provided, each providing an electrostatic field directed radially towards the cylinder 10, and an air blast directed at 45 degrees to the field and tangential to the cylinder, oppositely to the direction of motion in the case of 15, 15<SP>1</SP> and in the direction of motion in the case of 15<SP>11</SP>, the air blasts from 15<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>11</SP> serving to prevent set-off due to contact with the cylinders 13, 14. Each hold-down device comprises a conducting hollow tube (20) mounted within an insulating tube (21) of polyvinyl chloride containing 20% by weight of carbon black conductive particles and no air spaces. There is an annular air space (22) between the tubes. The conductive tube is formed with a series of radially projecting metal ionizing pins (28) all in the same plane and aligned with holes (30) in the insulating tube, and the tubes (20, 21) are formed with a further row each of holes (32, 34) aligned with each other and positioned 45 degrees from the pins. The conductive tube is given a high electric potential, and the pins produce a field directed towards the cylinder 10 to cause the sheet to adhere to the cylinder. Compressed air is supplied through a pipe (26) to the interior of the conductive and passes out through said further rows of holes to be directed tangentially of the cylinder.
