Abstract
A rutile pigment consists of at least 95% TiO2 as single particle not more than 20% thereof being above 0.3 m wide and not more than 10% being less than 0.08m wide and has a ratio of light scattering coefficient in 4570 <\>rA blue light to that in 6100 <\>rA red light (SX ratio) of at least 1.46. Coating with a mixture of Al2O3, SiO2 and/or TiO2 in amount up to 15% of the rutile gives an SX ratio of 1.5-1.9. The rutile may be prepared by either hydrolysing Ti(SO4)2 solution by heating in the presence of hydrous titania as nucleating agent and calcining the hydrolysate at 750-1050 DEG C. as described in Specification 568,232, or preferably by oxidizing TiCl4 vapour with air or O2. In the latter method the size is controlled by the dilution of O2, retention time in reaction zone, flow rates, presence of AlCl3 (Specification 707,560) and an alkali metal chloride (75-1000 p.p.m. of TiO2 being produced) as described in Canadian patent 662,785. The pigment is coated by suspension in an aqueous slurry, at 50-100 DEG C., of water-soluble Al, Si and Ti compounds (100-600 g./l.) adjusting the pH to ppt. the Al2O3, SiO2 and/or TiO2 on the base pigment, adjusting the pH to 6-9, and recovering the pigment particles which are then dry milled.
