Abstract

1,085,459. V.T.O.L. aircraft. A. P. PEDRICK. March 3, 1966, No. 54754/65. Headings B7G and B7W. [Also in Division F1] A delta-wing V.T.O.L. aircraft having four main forward propulsion engines 66 to 69, Fig. 12, has four banks (72 to 75), Fig. 11 (not shown), of horizontally pivotable, gas turbine jet engines (see Division F1) for vertical lift with two banks (76, 77) of fixed vertical engines. Baffles 84, 85 deflect the exhaust from the main engines during vertical lift. When the engines in the banks (72 to 75) are in their horizontal position the compartments containing these banks may be covered on the upper and lower wing surfaces by layers of flexible material unwound from rollers at the forward ends of the compartments, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). A balance jet may be provided at the nose of the aircraft. An automobile store has an entrance door 78, and an exit door 79 at each side of the control and passenger cabin 64. During an emergency the latter may be detached for descent by parachute. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), there are balance jets at the nose and wing tips, and the automobile store and the two banks of fixed vertical engines are omitted. In order to reduce noise in populated areas, the aircraft may take off and land on water or a flat floating barge which transports the aircraft from and to harbour airports on the shore of the sea, a lake or a river.
