Abstract

Synthetic fibres, e.g. polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyamide and polyvinyl alcohol, are steamed at 100 DEG -130 DEG C for 1-30 minutes, ped in a solution containing 3-40% by weight of a metal salt at normal temperature to 70 DEG C for from 1 second to 60 minutes and then dipped in water and/or a dilute aqueous alkaline solution containing at most 15% by weight of NH4OH, Na2HPO4, Na2SiO3 or Na2 CO3 to deposit hydroxide of the metal on and in the fibres, the metal salt being one which is hydrolysed to the metal hydroxide by water and/or said dilute aqueous alkaline solution, to eliminate their lustre, increase their softness, eliminate their waxy feeling, reduce their deterioration in light and increase their heat-resistance and water absorption. Suitable metallic salts are Al2(SO4)3, Al Cl3, Al(Ac)3, BaCl2, BiCl3, Ca Cl2, Ca(NO3)2, Ca(SCN)2, Pb(Ac)2, Pb(NO3)2, SnCl4, SnCl2, SbCl4, SbCl3, Sr(NO3)2, ZnCl2, Zn(NO3)2, Zn(Ac)2, Ti(SO4)2, TiCl4 and (NH4)2 SnCl6. The solvent for the metallic salt may be water, ether, alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. The fibres may subsequently be treated with an aqueous solution containing 2-10% by weight of disodium phosphate at 45 DEG -60 DEG C for 1-15 minutes, washed with water, treated with an aqueous solution containing 3-5% by weight of sodium silicate for 1-30 minutes, washed well in running water for 30 minutes and dried.
