Abstract
1,085,239. Crimping and tensioning yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 13, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963; June 3, 1964], Nos. 45560/63 and 22886/64. Headings DID and D1F. In a continuous combined drawing and bulking (or irregular crimping) process, an undrawn synthetic polymer e.g. nylon, multifilament, twisted or twistless yarn (or a plurality thereof) is drawn (with a stretch ratio of at least 2:1) by pairs of rollers in one or two stages in at least the second of which the stretch in the yarn is concentrated at a non-rotatable, optionally heated, snubbing pin. The drawn yarn is immediately and directly forwarded, with a mechanical overfeed not exceeding 20% and heating (as by heated draw rolls) to ensure or assist in the yarn contraction or relaxation, to a stuffer-box crimping apparatus, and set or allowed to set by additional and/or residual heat. An air jet may act on low tension span(s) of yarn between supply package and feed rolls of a drawing mechanism and between the (final) draw rollers and the stuffer-box to intermingle the filaments and/or to cool them before wind-up. In the stuffer-box crimper shown, a conglomerated, columnar mass of filaments passes into a weight-loaded setting chamber 39 limited vertical movements of which, on its flexible, spring, supporting cantilevers 43, 45, in response to variation in the level of yarn therein, operates a microswitch 57 to select a voltage which is rectified and applied to a magnetic particle brake 61 to adjust correctively the tension in yarn withdrawn from the chamber against the resistance of an adjustable flap 53, so that the yarn level in the chamber is maintained constant.
