Abstract

A supporting structure for use with a plurality of fuel elements forming a fuel element assembly includes a grid comprising a plurality of fuel element ferrules, e.g. of stainless steel, which are joined to one another, each embracing a fuel element so as to position the fuel elements laterally relative to each other, and a support member to which the grid is connected by means of tabs carried by at least some of the ferrules distributed round the periphery of the grid, the tabs being folded so that the support member lies between the tabs and the grid. The support member may be a sleeve provided with openings in its side walls through which the tabs pass. As shown in Fig. 3, at least some of the ferrules 4 distributed round the periphery of the grid carry two tabs 5, 6, one tab 5 being provided with a tongue 13 which engages a recess 14 provided in the other tab 6 when the tabs are folded into position (Fig. 4, not shown). The tongue 13 is welded to the edges of the recess 14. The grid is thus positively positioned without the need to make a weld to the sleeve material, which is preferably of a zirconium alloy.
