Abstract
1,084,726. Controlling chemical reactions; controlling mixing by viscosity. MO OCH DOMSJO A.B. Feb. 2, 1965 [Feb. 4, 1964], No. 4558/65. Headings B1C and B1X. Organic compounds are sulphonated and/or sulphated by reaction with gaseous sulphur trioxide, or a mixture thereof with air, the supply of organic compound to the reaction vessel being controlled automatically by a device which is actuated by changes in the resistance to the motion of a stirring device in the reaction vessel, so as to keep the viscosity of the reaction mixture substantially constant. As shown, a water-jacketted reaction vessel 1 is provided with a cooled stirrer 9 driven by an electric motor 11, the current intensity or power demand of the motor 11 controlling a transducer 12 which actuates a valve 14 controlling admission of organic compound to the reactor 1. Sulphur trioxide mixture is admitted through inlet 5. A temperature control device 8 in the product outlet 7 controls admission of cooling water to the jacket of the reactor. Compounds which may be sulphonated and/or sulphated include fatty alcohols, polyglycol ethers, alkyl benzenes, fatty acids and fat oils.
