Abstract

946,450. Controlling chemical reactions. M. BALLESTRA. May 4, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959], No. 15695/60. Heading B1X. A method of controlling the addition of reactants in a continuous chemical reaction in the liquid phase is in the variations of relative density of the reaction products as the reaction proceeds. Through the pipes 4 and 5 to the mixer 1 two reagents arrive in the stoichiometric proportions necessary to obtain the final product, and are mixed by means of the agitator 2 and recycled through the pump 16. From the pipe, through which the reaction product is recycled, is continuously drawn by means of the pump 17, a sample of the product which is sent to the scale bulb through the heat exchanger 18 and the coil 22. The oscillations of the said scale are transmitted, according to their direction, to one of the two switches 12 or 13 which moves its corresponding timer 10 or 11 acting on the change-speed drive 7 of the motor 8, which drives the pump 6 feeding in one of the two reagents, to adjust the quantity that this pump feeds in. The drawing off of the sample is continuous, and thus the control of the sample weight is continuous and also the regulation of the amount of one of the reagents is continuous. An example of the working can be given by the sulphonation of dodecyl benzol.
