Abstract

1,084,666. Tunnel diode amplifiers. MULLARD Ltd. March 25, 1966, No. 13291/66. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H1] A tunnel diode amplifier has independent means for determining the bias source D.C. resistance and the A.C. stabilizing resistance. The input signal is extracted from waveguide G<SP>1</SP> by a dielectric surrounded probe P and passed to the tunnel diode D through a quarter-wave matching section l 1 , the impedance of the line being variable by means of a slider U so as to vary the matching and thus the gain. Across the diode is connected a matching section L1 slightly less than a quarter wavelength to make it appear inductive and a bandwidth limiting quarter-wave line l 3 coupled by a capacitor, C3, variation of which varies the bandwidth. The power supply provides a voltage which determines the D.C. working point on the diode characteristic, e.g. the point for least noise, and a choke isolated resistor R3 which, it is explained, controls the dynamic range of the amplifier by determining the apparent D.C. resistance of the supply source. The supply is connected through a stub line 5 having a non- reflective lossy termination C2, R1 (equivalent to the correspondingly referenced components in the equivalent circuit of Fig. 4, not shown) and this provides stabilizing resistance independent of the apparent D.C. resistance of the supply source. The waveguide G<SP>1</SP> may be associated with a circulator.
