Abstract

1385629 Radio transmitters; amplifiers THOMSON-CSF 19 Nov 1973 [21 Nov 1972] 53684/73 Headings H3W and H4L [Also in Division H1] In a klystron amplifier for a television transmitter, the klystron having external cavities 11-14, in which at least one cavity 12-other than the output cavity 14-has a coaxial output 17, the internal conductor of which is extended to form a coupling loop inside the cavity, the amplifier comprises a switch 20 for coupling the cavity either to a dissipative load 27 or a section of coaxial cable 22 short-circuited at its end, the total length of the coaxial connection between the cavity and short-circuit being determined so as to substantially create a shortcircuit at the cavity for the audio signal. The coaxial line section 22 may be formed by a variable length stub, while the switch 20 may be a coaxial relay or an electronic switch, e.g. PIN diodes. The arrangement is intended to allow of a video amplifier, in which a wide band-width is obtained by stagger tuning the cavities 11-14, by means of adjustable plungers (not shown) and additionally damping by means of resistive loads 26, 27, being, on failure of the audio tube, switched automatically to act as the audio output stage, in which a narrow-band amplifier of higher gain is required.
