Abstract

1,084,587. Transistor amplitude modulating circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 9, 1966 [June 9, 1965], No. 24396/65. Heading H3R. A suppressed carrier modulating circuit comprises a tapped inductance 7 shunted by a resistance 6 and arranged in series between modulation input terminals 1, 2 and the output load 5, the centre of tap of inductance 7 being switched at carrier frequency to the terminal 2. In the circuit shown, when the transistor 8 is cut off the resistance 6 has a lower impedance than inductance 7 and the input is in effect connected to the output. When transistor 8 conducts the inductance 7 acts as a transformer and the output across load 5 is reversed in phase. With the carrier applied to terminal 9 the output is reversed in phase at carrier frequency and represents a double-sideband suppressed carrier signal. The transistor 8 may be replaced by a diode bridge, and the direct connection between terminals 2 and 4 may be replaced by a second tapped inductance shunted by a second resistance, the switching means connecting the taps of the two inductances.
