Abstract

A process of making hydrogen by a shift reaction involving H2O + CO at 350-700 DEG F. is effected in the presence of a Zn(Cu/Al2O3 catalyst such that the Zn/Cu ratio is 0.5 to 3 parts Zn per part Cu and the Al2O3 content is 1-55% by weight. An activity constant Kw is used to assess the suitability of the catalyst for effecting the shift reaction at relatively low temperatures, e.g. 350-550 DEG C.ALSO:Shift reaction catalysts comprising Cu-ZnO and Al2O3 such that the ratio Zn:Cu is 0.5 to 3:1 and the Al2O3 content is 1 - 55% are described. Preparations are conventional e.g. using soluble metallic salts, Na2Co3 as precipitant and following this with calcination and reduction with H2 and if desired steam.
