Abstract

1,084,527. Copying lathes. TRUE-TRACE CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1964, No. 50956/64. Headings B3B and B3T. A copying device adapted to be mounted on the carriage of a machine tool such as a lathe comprises a base 19 with a slideway 20 which carries a first slide 21 actuated for longitudinal movement by a fluid motor 22. Slideways 25 on the slide 21 carry a transverse slide 26 which is actuated by a second fluid motor 28. The transverse slide carries a tool holder 54 and a copier valve 52 the stylus of which co-operates with a template 43 carried in an adjustable mounting assembly 35 attached to the base 19 by a bracket 36. The adjustment of the assembly 35 is by means of an adjustment slide 51 which permits the position of the copier valve and stylus to be pre-adjusted in relation to the template prior to the operation of the device. A control system effects the operation of the device in co-operation with the copier valve and includes a pair of positioning controls 61, 62 for manually controlling the longitudinal movement (along axis 17) and cross-traverse (along axis 27) respectively, a speed control 63 for the slide movements and a mode control 60 relating to whether facing or turning operations are being performed when the device is under tracer control. The copier valve 52 which has a gymbal type stylus mounting is of the multi-land piston type which is displaceable in response to the stylus movement from the template contour. The valve piston has three areas affecting operation, namely a safety cutoff portion, a contouring portion and a coordinator portion. The co-ordinator and contouring portions of the valve function in cooperation with each other to control the tool movements by so adjusting the speed of traverse to ensure precise following of the template by the stylus. The safety cut-off portion of the valve is operative when the stylus is overdeflected and in order to prevent the tracer valve being damaged. The speed control 63 adjusts the size of an orifice in an exhaust line from the valve which ultimately controls the rate of movement of the fluid motors. A diagrammatic circuit diagram, Fig. 3 (not shown), indicates the fluid operation of the device.
