7 Claims.
This invention relates to vertical boring mills, and more particularly to a hydraulic duplicating attachment operable in conjunction with such boring mills.
It is the object of this invention to provide in such vertical boring mill a hydraulic duplicating attachment with the movements of an angularly inclined slide being effected by a hydraulic cylinder controlled by a hydraulic tracer responding to the surface of a template.
It is the further object of this invention to provide in such mill a vertically adjustable slide, a horizontally adjustable slide thereon, and a third upwardly inclined angularly arranged slide reciprocally arranged upon said horizontally adjustable slide, said third slide being arranged at an acute angle to the vertical axis of the rotatable worktable which forms a part of said mill.
It is the further object of this invention to provide in conjunction with said vertical boring mill a horizontally reciprocal slide upon which is mounted an upwardly inclined reciprocal slide arranged at an angle less than 90 degrees to the direction of movement of said horizontally movable slide.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawings in which:

Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view similar to Figure 1 but with the workpiece inverted; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary diagrammatic view showing the hydraulic cylinder, the tracer head and the hydraulic fluid pressure supply unit, together with the hydraulic connections therebetween.
It will be understood that the above drawings illustrate merely a preferred embodiment of the invention and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set out.
Referring to the drawings a vertical boring mill is fragmentarily shown including the rotatable table 5 l with workpiece supporting chuck 12 upon which is mounted workpiece l3, the interior surface 14 of which is being machined.
It will be noted that vertically adjustable slide ll may be controlled in any conventional manner such as by a hand operated lead screw, and similarly the horizontally adjustable slide l9 may be controlled in any conventional manner such as by a hand or power operated lead screw to thereby effect horizontal movements of slide l9 relative to its support l1.
Slide ll as well as slide l9 thereon are arranged in upright position, and angularly inclined slide support 20 is secured to and forms a part of horizontally adjustable slide l9. The longitudinal axis of slide support 20 extends upwardly and is inclined at an angle to the direction of movement of horizontally adjustable slide l9.
Similarly inclined reciprocal slide 21 is mounted upon slide support 28 and retained thereon by suitable guideways, slide 2| having secured thereto at its upper end transverse plate 22 to which is secured hydraulic cylinder 23. Stationary piston rod 24 with its associated piston 25 is arranged within reciprocal cylinder 23, with the lower end of rod 24 being secured to angular slide support 20 at point 26.
Hollow triangularly shaped bracket 32 is joined to angularly inclined slide 2i at points 33 and 34 and has at its lower end a hollow collar 35 which is adapted to supportably receive and retain the cylindrical barrel 36 of the hydraulic tracer employed.
A tracer head 3'! is arranged at one end of said barrel and includes a movablevalve element 31' engaged at one end by a coil spring 31" supported within said tracer head. Tracer arm 38 is centrally arranged within barrel 3% and at its inner end cooperatively engages the tracer valve 3?, while its opposite end projects outwardly from barrel 33 and has at its outer end the tracer tip or contactor 33 which is adapted to cooperatively engage the edge of template 43.
It will be understood that the tracer mechanism above described very briefly is a hydraulic universal type tracer which is spring biased for eiiecting movement in one direction of the tracer spindle 38, with movement in the opposite direction of said spindle being effected by the: thrust f the template with respect to the tracer tip.
In any event the detail of construction of the tracer mechanism forms no part of the present J invention and for this reason its detail of construction is omitted. It is suiflcient to state that the valve element 31' within tracer head 3'? by its movements controls the delivery of pressure fluid out of either of the cylinder ports 55 or 33 and through the cylinder operating pipes 21 or 28 respectively. It will be understood that with the tracer tip 39 merely engaging the surface of template and with ther being no feed movement of the horizontally movable slide i9 that the tracer valve will be in a neutral position and there will be no flow of fluid through either of the pipes 2'! or 28.
Referring to Figure 4 there is diagrammatically shown at 31 a. hydraulic fluid supply unit which includes a sump and a pump in conjunction therewith which is adapted to supply pressure fluid at a pre-determined pressure at portand through the connecting supply pipe as which is joined at its other end to the tracer head at inlet port 553.
This pressure fluid supplied to the tracer head 3! is adapted to be delivered out through either of the cylinder pipes 21 or 23 depending upon the positioning of the tracer valve 31 under the control of the spring 3'!" and the tracer spindle 38 responding to the surface of the template it. Now in the neutral position of said valve above referred to the pressure fluid supplied to the tracer head at port 50 will be blocked off by said valve and will not flow through either of the pipes 21 or 28.
If the tracer valve is moved in one direction from the neutral position then pressure fluid will be supplied through pipe 21 for example, and
exhaust fluid from the opposite end of cylinder 4 23 will be returned to the tracer head through the pipe 28, and this fluid will be exhausted through the tracer valve and out from tracer head 31 through the exhaust port 33 which is connected to exhaust opening 5i in the hydraulic unit 4'! by the conduit 52.
Now assuming that the tracer valve is moved in the opposite direction from the neutral position above described, then in that case pressure fluid coming into tracer head 3'? at port 53 is delivered through cylinder pipe 28 to the opposite end of cylinder 23, and the exhaust fluid upon the opposite side of the piston within said cylinder is returned to the tracer head through the pipe 2? and into port 45, through the tracer valve and is thence exhausted through port 53 and exhaust pipe 52 back to the hydraulic unit.
With pressure fluid delivered through the pipe 21 it is apparent that the cylinder 23 will move inwardly eflecting a corresponding inward movement of the angularly inclined cutter supporting slide 2i; and likewise with pressure fluid delivered to the pipe 28 cylinder 23 will move outwardly.

The slide :13 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 is retained within the guide arm 44 which projects outwardly from the mill bed and which is adapted to permit horizontal adjustments of slide 43 which carries the template 40.
Referring to Figure 4 there is shown an additional port 56 at the lower end of the tracer head 3? which is a vacuum port and which is joined to a corresponding port 54 of hydraulic unit G? by a conduit 55. Arranged within said hydraulic unit is a device which forms no part of the present invention but which is adapted to create a vacuum or reduced pressure condition in communication with port 54 and the conduit 55. By this construction any fluid seepage within the tracer head 37 may be withdrawn from the interior thereof and returned to the hydraulic unit 41.
Operation In the operation of this attachment for a vertical boring mill as shown in Figure 1 the workpiece IB is rotated by the table H on a vertical axis, while the cutter 3| is removing metal from the interior surface [4 of said workpiece in a conventional mill operation. However, in addition the upright horizontally adjustable slide i9 is adapted to be fed in one direction or the other by suitable lead screw so that the entire interior surface of the workpiece may be traversed, with the lateral edge of the tracer tip or contactor 39 responding to the surface of the template 8 to thereby control the position of the cutter 35 during feed movement of the slide it. When the edge of tracer tip 33 is out of contact with the top edge of template it, spring 3?" within tracer head 31, Fig. 2, moves valve 31' into extreme negative position, i. e. to the right. Pressure fluid through tracer inlet port 53, Fig. a, is then directed by valve 37 out cylinder pipe 2! causing inward movement of cylinder 23 until the edge of tracer tip 39 carried by slide 21 is in engagement with the top edge of template :33.
This lateral pressure engagement between said template and the edge of tracer tip 33 causes the tracer spindle 33 and valve 3'? to move inwardly to the left against the action of spring In this position there will be no flow of pressure fluid through tracer head 31 to either end of cylinder 23.
Now when the lateral edge of tracer tip 35 engages a rise in the edge of the template 49, there is an increased impedance or lateral pressure developed between said template and tracer tip causing a movement of the tracer spindle and the valve Bl to move to the left of said neutral position. In this position of valve 3? pressure fluid is directed through pipe 28 causing cylinder 23 to move outwardly until said increased lateral pressure is reduced to the point that valve is back in neutral position and the flow of fluid and movement of said cylinder stops. The uni.- versal tracer mechanism above described is more fully disclosed in the following patents of the applicant: 2,386,825; 2,390,566; 2,301,719; 2,374,714; 2,331,817; 2,389,653; and 2,402,306.
Now as shown in Figure 3, the arrangement is the same however the cutter 3! is now working over the exterior surface M of workpiece i3,
and for this operation a different template 40' is employed. Consequently by the present construction employing an upright horizontally adjustable slide, and in conjunction therewith an upwardly inclined angular slide, it is possible for a single tracer and a single hydraulic cylinder to control the reciprocal movements of the upwardly inclined angular slide which carries the cutting tool whereby with the workpiece mounted upon said rotatable table of the vertical boring mill, it is possible to completely form the interior and exterior surfaces of the workpiece.
Having described my invention reference should now be had to the claims which follow for determining the scope thereof.
I claim:
1. A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers,
'curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with the profile of a template, including a horizontal rotatable table for holding and turning a work; an upright slide support with vertically arranged guideways, an upright verti- 'cally adjustable slide thereon, an upright horizontally adjustable slide movably mounted upon said vertically adjustable slide, means on said first slide for guiding said second slide longitudinally of the work, means for moving said horizontally movable slide at a constant rate of advance, a template disposed in fixed position lying in a plane parallel to the path of movement of said horizontally movable slide, with its profile in a plane parallel to said path of movement, an uptravel of said horizontally movable slide, a work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projecting laterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said profile and responsive to relief and impedance from said template, and a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said inclined slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support, said system so connecting the tracer and the cylinder that actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable.
2. A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers, curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with the profile of a template, including a horizonta1 rotatable table for holding and turning a work; an upright slide support with vertically arranged guideways, an upright vertically adjustable slide thereon, an upright horizontally adjustable slide movably mounted upon said vertically adjustable slide, means on said first slide for guiding said second slide longitudinally of the work, means for moving said horizontally movable slide at a constant rate of advance, a template disposed in fixed position lying '6 in a plane parallel to the path of movement of said horizontally movable slide, with its profile in a plane parallel to said path of movement, an upwardly inclined slide support mounted on said horizontally movable slide and arranged at I an acute angle to the direction of movement of said latter slide, and with said inclined slide support having similarly inclined guideways thereon, a correspondingly inclined slide mounted on said latter guideways and adapted to reciprocate at an angle to the work acute in the direction of travel of said horizontally movable slide, a Work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projecting laterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said profile and responsive to relief and impedance from said template, and a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said inclined Slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support, said system so connecting the tracer and the cylinder that actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable, said template being mounted in a plane offset from the planes of said slides.
3. A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers, curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with the profile of a template, including a horizontal rotatable table for holding and turning a work; an upright slide support with vertically arranged guideways, an upright vertically adjustable slide thereon, an upright horizontally adjustable slide movably mounted upon said vertically adjustable slide, means on said first slide for guiding said second slide longitudinally of the work, means for moving said horizontally movable slide at a constant rate of advance, a template disposed in fixed position profile in a plane parallel to said path of movement, an upwardly inclined slide support mounted on said horizontally movable slide and arranged at an acute angle to the direction of movement of said latter slide, and with said inclined slide support having similarly inclined guideways thereon, a correspondingly inclined slide mounted on said latter guideways and adapted to reciprocate at an angle to the work acute in the direction of travel of said horizontally movable slide, a work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projecting laterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust'relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said profile and responsive to relief and impedance from said template, and a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said inclined slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support,
said system so connecting the tracer and cylinder that actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable, said cylinder being mounted on said inclined slide and extending outwardly from the upper end thereof.
4. A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers, curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with the profile of a template, including a horizontal rotatable table for holding and turning a work; an upright slide support with vertically arranged guideways, an upright vertically adjustable slide thereon, an upright horizontally adjustable slide movably mounted upon said vertically adjustable slide, means on said first slide for guiding said second slide longitudinally of the work, means for moving said horizontally movable slide at a constant rate of advance, a template disposed in fixed position lying in a plane parallel to the path of movement of said horizontally movable slide, with its profile in a plane parallel to said path of movement, an upwardly inclined slide support mounted on said horizontally movable slide and arranged at an acute angle to the direction of movement of said latter slide, and with said inclined slide support having similarly inclined guideways therer on, a correspondingly inclined slide mounted on said latter guideways and adapted to reciprocate at an angle to the work acute in the direction of travel of said horizontally movable slide, a work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projecting laterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said profile and responsive to relief and impedance from said template, and a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said inclined slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support, said system so connecting the tracer and the cylinder that :7
actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable, said tracer as mounted on said inclined slide being adapted for vertical, horizontal and angular movements in unison with said inclined slide.
5. A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers, curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with the profile of a template, including a horizontal rotatable table for holding and turning a work; an upright slide support with horizontally movable slide and arranged at an acute angle to the direction of movement of said latter slide, and with said inclined slide support having similarly inclined guideways thereon, a correspondingly inclined slide mounted on said latter guideways and adapted to reciprocate at an angle to the work acute in the direction of travel of said horizontally movable slide, a work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projecting laterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said Profile and responsive to relief and impedance from said template, a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said inclined slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support, said system so connecting the tracer and the cylinder that actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable, and an upright stationary template holder lying in a plane parallel to the planes of said slides and having a horizontal guideway, said template being mounted in said guideway and adapted for horizontal adjustments therein.
6 A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers, curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with re profile of a template, including a horizontal rotatable table for holding and turning a Work; an upright slide support with vertically arranged guideways, an upright vertically adjustable slide thereon, an upright horizontally adjustable slide movably mounted upon said vertically adjustable slide, means on said first slide for guiding said second slide longitudinally of the work, means for moving said horizontally movable slide at a constant rate of advance, a template disposed in fixed position lying in a plane parallel to the path of movement of said horizontally movable slide, with its profile in a plane parallel to said path of movement, an upwardly inclined slide support mounted on said horizontally movable slide and arranged at an acute angle to the direction of movement of said latter slide, and with said inclined slide support having similarly inclined guideways thereon, a correspondingly inclined slide mounted on said latter guideways and adapted to reciprocate at an angle to the work acute in the direction of travel of said horizontally movable slide, a work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projectlaterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said profile and responsive to relief and impedarms from said template, a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said. inclined slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support, said system so connecting the tracer and the cylinder that actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable, said boring mill including a bed, a horizontal guide arm joined to said bed, and extending outwardly therefrom parallel to the plane of said first slide, a slide mounted on said guide arm adapted for horizontal adjustments, an upright support arm on said latter slide, and an upright template holder on the upper end of said arm and having a horizontally extending guideway therein, said template being adjustably mounted in said guideway.

A vertical boring mill for reproducing tapers, curves, and right angle shoulders on the work in conformity with the profile of a template, including a horizontal rotatable table for holding and turning a work; an upright slide support with vertically arranged guideways, an upright vertically adjustable slide thereon; an upright horizontally adjustable slide movably mounted upon said vertically adjustable slide, means on said first slide for guiding said second slide longitudinally of the work, means for moving said horizontally movable slide at a constant rate of advance, a template disposed in fixed position lying in aplane parallel to the path of movement of said horizontally movable slide, with its profile in a plane parallel to said path of movement, an upwardly inclined slide support mounted on said horizontally movable slide and arranged at an acute angle to the direction of movement of said latter slide, and with said inclined slide 30 rocate at an angle to the work acute in the direction of travel of said horizontally movable slide, a work engaging cutter on said inclined slide, an upright bracket secured to said inclined slide and projecting laterally thereof, a tracer mechanism mounted on said bracket with its longitudinal axis at right angles to the plane of said template and having a finger projecting longitudinally of said tracer mechanism engaging the profile of said template and responsive to lateral thrust relatively to said tracer mechanism in the plane of said profile and responsive to relief and impedance from said template, a hydraulic system including a cylinder and piston for reciprocating the inclined slide, said cylinder being secured to said inclined slide and said piston being joined to said inclined slide support, said system so connecting the tracer and the cylinder that actuation of the tracer finger by the template operates the cylinder to move the inclined slide to neutralize the actuation of said tracer finger, thus reproducing on the work the profile of said template, said finger being universally movable, said bracket being of hollow triangular shape with two of its spaced apexes secured to said inclined slide, and with said tracer secured adjacent the third apex thereof remote from said inclined slide.
