Abstract

Detergent compositions having pH from 3 to 11, and which are mild to the skin and of a low order of opthalmic activity, comprise a mixture of cationic and non-ionic surface-active agents and between 0.4 and 7% by weight of at least one imidazoline derivative having the general formula <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/1> wherein n is 2-4 inclusive; m is 0 or 1; R is chosen from saturated and unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups having 8 to 21 carbon atoms inclusive; X is -NH2, -NH (CH2CH2OH) or -N(CH2CH2OH)2 or -OR11; R11 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive; R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive; A is chosen from <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/2> <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/3> <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/4> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom or <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/5> and <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/6> wherein Y1 is <FORM:1084232/C4-C5/7> and R111 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive, and where m = 1, the imidazoline is in the form of its quaternary salt.ALSO:The invention relates to imidazoline derivatives having the general formula <FORM:1084232/C2/1> wherein n is 2-4 inclusive; m is 0 or 1; R is chosen from saturated and unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups having 8 to 21 carbon atoms inclusive; X is -NH2, -NH (CH2CH2OH) or -N(CH2CH2OH)2 or -OR11; R11 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive; R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive; A is chosen from <FORM:1084232/C2/2> <FORM:1084232/C2/3> <FORM:1084232/C2/4> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom or <FORM:1084232/C2/5> and <FORM:1084232/C2/6> wherein Y1 is <FORM:1084232/C2/7> and R111 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive, and where m = 1, the imidazoline is in the form of its quaternary salt. The imidazolines are prepared by reacting an imidazoline having the general formula <FORM:1084232/C2/8> wherein n is 2-4 inclusive, R is chosen from saturated and unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups having 8 to 21 carbon atoms inclusive, and B is -OH or -NH2, with at least one compound chosen from butyrolactone or equivalent lactone, lower alkyl acrylate esters of the general formula CH2= CR1CO2R11 and acrylamides of the general formula CH2=CR1CONH2, wherein R1 and R11 are as defined above, the butyrolactone or equivalent lactone being chosen as a reactant only when B is -NH2.
