Abstract

An aqueous alkaline e.g. pH 10.5-12 pyrophosphate solution for producing bright zinc electro-deposits contains at least one zinc salt, preferably Zn2 P2 O7 to provide a total P2 O7/Zn weight ratio of 6.5-8.0, and has dissolved therein (1) a carrier selected from bis-[sulphonaphthyl] methanes, naphthalene derivatives containing at least one substituent viz. hydroxy, amino, imino or sulphonic acid in the free acid or alkali metal salt form, benzene or alkyl or imino-benzene derivatives containing a sulphonic acid group in the free acid or alkali metal or ammonium salt form, a sulphonamido or sulphonimido group, and allyl sulphonic acid and alkali metal salts thereof; and (2) a carbonyl compound, viz. an aldehyde such as o-, m-, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, benzaldehyde, piperonal, veratraldehyde, b -methoxylpropionaldehyde, furfural, glyceraldehyde, anisaldehyde, salicylaldehyde propyl sultone, ethyl vanillin, thiophene-2-aldehyde, or a ketone such as acetophenone, acetylacetone, isophorone, dihydroxyacetone.
