Abstract

1,083,131. Suspended ceilings. T. FLINTOFT. March 16, 1964 [Jan. 8, 1963; Feb. 28, 1963], Nos. 818/63 and 8003/63. Heading E1W. [Also in Division F2] A nail or staple for use in securing expanded or foam plastics sheet material or plaster board to joists and having a self burying action comprises at least one shank and at least one cross piece 2 of thin blade form, disposed at a distance from the driven end of the nail. The shank comprises a thin leading part 20 to enter a joist followed by a thicker rear shank part 21 which serves as a distance piece to prevent compression of the foam sheet material. The thicker shank portion 21 may be provided at the head end with external or internal threads for the mounting fittings. In a modification, the shank (Fig. 14) consists of two parts (24, 25) secured together end to end as by screw thread engagement, the anchorage end of the part (25) being of hook form (29) for removable suspension of the plastics sheeting (10) on support rails (30). In another modification a distance piece in the form of a sleeve is temporarily secured to the shank near the pointed end (7) the connection being broken when the sleeve abuts a member such as a joist (11) (Fig. 15) on the shank being driven therein. In another modification the head of the nail is provided with a cartridge (33) (Fig. 18).
