Lathes for turning shells as described in the parent Specification have the rest a traversable on ways parallel to the lathe axis to deal with shells without truncated ends; the universal joint in the shaft c being omitted. In a modification, the guide-ways b may be mounted on a swivel rest, the universal joint being then retained so that the lathe may be used either for parallel-ended shells or shells with truncated conical ends.
