A Timing device comprising a synchronous motor (4) driving a cam 2 whose angular position on its shaft 3 is adjustable, the cam actuating through a lever system an electric switch, includes two levers 11, 14 pivoted on a common shaft 10 and connected through a hairpin spring 13, the cam 2 acting on lever 11 and the lever 14 actuating a switch blade (17) (Fig. 2, not shown). A C-spring (16) provides for snap-action movement of the blade (17). Surface 9 of cam 2 depresses nose 12 of lever 11, which in turn rocks lever 14 via spring 13. When a blocking lever 21 is moved from position 25 to position 25<SP>1</SP>, however, so that a segment 23 of lever 21 engages the tail 20 of lever 14, the lever 14 is blocked and the movement of lever 11 is absorbed by spring 13. A tipping projection 26 restores lever 21 to position 25 if blocking is not required for more than one cycle. With lever 21 in position 25<SP>11</SP>, however, lever 14 is blocked until lever 21 is moved manually back to position 25 or 25<SP>1</SP>. An intermediate lever (31) (Fig. 8, not shown) may be inserted between cam 2 and the first lever (11<SP>1</SP>), the shaft (33) of lever (31) being rotatable for adjustment purposes. When applied to defrosting a refrigerator, the timing device initiates defrosting via a boss (42) on cam 2 engaging lever 11 and actuating the switch via lever 14, an extra lever (38) then latching a nose (41) on lever 11. At a certain temperature a thermally responsive capsule (47) expands to unlatch the nose (41) of lever 11 from lever (38) and a leaf spring 30 pivots levers 11, 14, back to their original positions (Fig. 9, not shown). A second boss (43) on cam 2 unlatches lever 11 if the capsule (47) is ineffective after a certain time.
