Abstract

1,081,250. Pipe couplings; joint-making packing. E. A. EGE. April 22, 1966 [April 27, 1965; Oct. 14, 1965], No. 17818/66. Headings F2B and F2G. [Also in Division E2] A unit 1 for coupling to a substantially identical unit is provided with arms 6 having at least two radially inwardly-projecting pins 6a adapted to engage helical grooves located on the outer surface of the identical unit, and a valve 8<SP>1</SP> biased on to a seat 9 by a spring 11<SP>1</SP> and opened by coaction of the extension 8a thereof which the extension on the valve of the identical unit when the two units are interengaged. The coupling unit may be of nylon or other plastics material, iron, aluminium or steel and, if of metal, the valve seat 9 is provided with a ring seal of resilient material. The valve components 8<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP> and the adaptor 3<SP>1</SP> may be of nylon or neoprene rubber, the valve seat seal then being dispensed with, or of metal. A hose 15 is secured to the interchangeable adaptor 3<SP>1</SP> by the use of a clamp comprising two halves or a worm-drive clip and having arms 17 terminating in claws 18 which engage notches 13 in the unit and to prevent detachment of the hose under pressure. A recess 5 in the unit receives an 0-ring of rubber or plastics material for contacting a similar ring in the identical unit; alternatively, the ring is of trapezium cross-section with or without a lip (4a), Figs. 8B and 8D (not shown), or having a convex sealing surface (19), Fig. 8C (not shown).
