Abstract

1,081,064. Testing and clearing yarns; stop motions. W. REINERS. July 3, 1964 [July 4, 1963], No. 27527/64. Headings DID, D1F and D1J. The presence or absence of a running thread in a textile machine is detected and/or the roughness of the thread is measured, in terms of variation in thickness of the thread core and/or fibres protruding therefrom, by a device wherein the thread F is passed between a light source or lamp 1 and a photo-electric cell 2. A diaphragm 3 having an elongated slot 4 of width not greater than three times the thickness of individual thread fibres f, or an optical system (not shown) for producing a correspondingly narrow beam of light impinging on the cell 2, is positioned on one side or the other of the thread F. Each protruding fibre or variation in thread thickness is reflected in the output current circuit 2a of the cell by an electric pulse or pulse fluctuation, the pulse signals are separated by a highpass filter, Fig. 2 (not shown) amplified, and perhaps smoothed by means of an integrating member, Fig. 4 (not shown) to provide effective direct measurements. The absence of a fibre frequency or unacceptable amplitude thereof may initiate operation of a stop-motion. Thread entanglements and/or faulty sections may be severed automatically by a magnetically operated cutter the current circuit of which is adapted to be interrupted by a micro-switch actuated by the detecting device.
