Abstract

1283528 Monitoring yarns CRABTREE ENG GROUP (COLNE) Ltd 27 Oct 1969 [18 Dec 1968] 60081/68 Heading D1F [Also in Divisions G1 and G4] A running yarn or other filament is diluted by a photoelectric measuring system which measures the period of interruption of an energy beam due to lateral movement of the yarn and emits a signal to an actuating device when the signal ceases. In the draw twist frame shown in Figure 1 the yarn 2 is drawn from a supply creel 1 and passed through the eyelet of lappet holder 3 by draw rollers 4 to be wound on package 6 formed on rotating spindle 5. The yarn is rotated about package 6 and this causes a ballooning effect 2a. Lappet holder 2 has a ceramic guide 11 for the yarn and a light source 9 and detector 8 mounted in aligned holes on an axis forming a chord of hole 12. The light source may be a tungsten lamp or an infra-red emitter and the light passes through slit 13 to detector 8. The ballooning yarn interrupts the energy beam twice for every rotation of the yarn to give a detector output signal which varies in dependence on balloon frequency and yarn diameter. The output signal is passed to a monostable multivibrator which holds up a relay while the yarn is running. If a clock pulse signal is counted while the relay is made the length of run can be determined, Figures 5 and 6 (not shown). The device can be used to sound an alarm signal or operate a yarn cutter to prevent further yarn from being drawn into the winding machine.
