Abstract

1,080,769. Railway vehicle undercarriages. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV - UND MASCHINENFABRIK. June 11, 1965 [June 11, 1964], No. 24869/65. Heading B7L. In a railway vehicle, a powered bogie 3, Fig. 1, is connected to the vehicle body 1, for the transmission of traction or braking forces, by two tie rods 8 v , 8 h the axes of the rods intersecting the central vertical axis of the bogie frame at a point P, at or near the level of the upper edges of the rails, and at least one end of each rod is connected to the body or bogie by a resilient element, e.g. 10 v or 10 h , having a non-linear characteristic, the rods being under tension in all operating conditions. As described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown), the spring characteristic becomes steeper with increased loading. Referring to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 (not shown), the spring (10 v ) or (10 h ) comprises a rubber ring (11) of conical form embedded between the conical surfaces of metal rings (14), (15) and vulcanized to them. The element is embedded in a shell (16) having at its centre a hole (17) for the passage of the rod (8). The shell is welded to carrier members (18) connected to a base plate (19) welded to the vehicle body. The ring (14) abuts a sleeve (20) on the rod (8), the sleeve (20) having a wide part (21) engaged by a nut (25) locked on the threaded end of the rod (8) by a pin (24). A spherical surface (22) on the sleeve (20) can abut a coacting surface (23) on the shell (16). The element (10) when unstressed is of hollow truncated form whereby the ring (11) is first subjected only to shearing forces until its free surfaces (27), (28) begin to bear on the plate (21) and the interior of the shell (16) respectively. Thereafter the rubber is subjected to pressure loading which increases continuously since continuously larger areas of the surfaces (27), (28) bear on the plate (21) and the shell (16). In another embodiment the resilient elements are inserted between the bogie and rods, the latter being connected to the body by links, and the rods are horizontal. The element 11 may be replaced by concentric rubber elements in stepped formation as described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively, the element 11 may be replaced by an evolute spring, a helical spring in which the coils are of varying pitch, Fig. 5 (not shown), or a spring of truncated conical form. In a further embodiment a helical spring acts between a pivot connection of a two-part tierod, and the vehicle body is described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown).
