Abstract

5,6-Dihydro-a -pyrones of the Formula (I), wherein R represents an alkyl group, R2, R3, R4 and R5, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxy, amino or sulpho groups, or any two adjacent radicals can together form an alkylenedioxy and R6 represents an alkylene group, are prepared by hydrogenating an a -pyrone of the Formula (II), wherein R7 represents an alkylene group or a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing an olefinic bond, in the presence of acetic acid and of a noble metal catalyst. <FORM:1080743/C2/1> <FORM:1080743/C2/2>
