Abstract

1,080,554. Polyvinyl chloride fibres of high shrinkability. A.C.S.A. APPLICAZIONI CHIMICHE S.p.A. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 31, 1963], No. 31325/64. Heading B5B. Textile fibres comprising " P.V.C. of syndiotacticity index" greater than 2 and with a residual shrinkability in boiling water or saturated steam between 10% and 30% of the initial length after having been shrunk in boiling water or saturated steam have a tenacity greater than 2À5 g./den., an elongation at break between 30% and 55%, an initial elastic modulus between 20 and 40 g./den. and a shrinkage in trichloroethylene at 40‹ C. of less than 1%. The expression " P.V.C. of high syndiotacticity index " is defined as meaning (A) vinylchloride homopolymers prepared at temperatures of from -10‹ to - 60‹ C. and having an intrinsic viscosity [#] greater than 0À7 dl/gr. and a syndiotacticity index greater than 2 (the syndiotacticity being defined as the ratio between the absorption of the infra-red bands D635 and D692 cm.<SP>-1</SP>) and (B) copolymers or polymer mixtures containing at least 85% of vinyl chloride and satisfying these conditions. The residual shrinkability may be imparted to the fibres by subjecting them to an additional heat stretching step, e.g. a tow of polyvinyl chloride may be spun under hotstretching conditions, subjected to finishing, drying and heat-setting steps, all under tension, relaxed, and then subjected to further stretching at above 100‹ C., e.g. at a temperature between 100‹ C. and 180‹ C., preferably between 120‹ C. and 140‹ C. with a stretch ratio greater than 1À1: 1 and up to the maximum allowed by the tenacity of the tow. The fibres after having been subjected to the additional heat-stretching are cooled down under tension and crimped at a temperature below 50‹ C.
