Abstract

1,159,623. Producing spandex filaments. KURASHIKI RAYON K.K. 3 April, 1967 [5 April, 1966], No. 15197/67. Heading B5B. Spandex filaments of temporarily lowered elongation are produced by dry-spinning a solution in an organic solvent having a boiling point not exceeding 200‹ C. of an elastic polyurethane prepared from a polymeric diol having a molecular weight of 500 to 5000, an aromatic diisocyanate and a diol having a molecular weight of 50 to 200, drying the spun filaments at a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent but not exceeding 200‹ C. to reduce the solvent content of the filament to not more than 0À5% by weight, drawing the filaments at a draw ratio of 2 : 1 to 6 : 1 at a temperature of 80‹ to 150‹ C., preferably 120‹ to 150‹ C., heat setting the drawn filaments at a temperature of 150‹ to 200‹ C., preferably 160‹ to 180‹ C., cooling the filaments to a temperature below 50‹ C. and thereafter shrinking them by 5 to 15% of their length before the shrinking step. The low molecular weight diol may be ethylene glycol. The polyurethane may be obtained by reacting a polyethylene propylene adipate having a molecular weight of 500-5000, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenyl methane diisocyanate and ethylene glycol. The solvent may be dimethyl formamide, dimethyl-acetamide, tetrahydrofurane or dimethyl-sulphoxide. The object of producing spandex filaments of temporary relatively low elongation is to facilitate subsequent processing of the filaments such as knitting and weaving. After the filaments have been used in the making of knitted or woven fabrics their elongation and elasticity may be restored by heating the fabrics to above 90‹ C., preferably 100‹ to 150‹ C. The spandex filaments of the invention have an elongation of about 100 to 120% and a tenacity of about 2À0 to 4À0 g/d. When shrunk in water at 15‹ C. for 15 minutes free of tension their elongation rises to, for example, 377%.
