Abstract
1,080,010. Bending. H. J. STEEL. Dec. 31, 1964, No. 52933/64. Heading B3E. A blank 34, formed from a pre-shaped metal tube, Fig. 5, is cold formed into a bend by forcing the blank around a curved channel in a die while supporting the ends of the blank with mandrels 46 and 56, the part of each mandrel embraced by the blank having a compound shape which is part cylindrical and part toroidal. The die is constituted by shaped blocks 22, 25, 31, and a roller 17, a plunger 55 being used to force a blank through the die. A mandrel 56 supports the trailing end of a blank 34b, while a floating mandrel 46 supports both its leading end and the trailing end of a blank 34a which is being formed within the curved channel. A collar 47 is provided centrally of the mandrel 46. In a similar operation (Fig. 11) a pre-shaped blank is formed between mandrels 91 and 83 against back pressure supplied by a fluid operated cylinder assembly 77. A roller die 72 is connected by an arm 75 to a piston rod 76, the die block 74 and mandrel 86 rotating with the workpiece drawing forming. Shaped collars 92 and 86 are attached to the two mandrels for co-operation with the blank ends.
