Abstract
NH3, H2S and HCN are removed from coke oven gas by washing the gas with an aqueous solution of pickling solution salt, i.e. FeSO4, 7H2O, oxidizing part of all of the resulting liquid with a free O2 containing gas, e.g. air, and further washing the gas with the oxidized liquid. Oxidation is effected, without separation of the solids produced in the wash, in concurrent flow at 70-110 DEG C. The effluent from the second wash may be used to give the crude gas a preliminary wash. Part of the solution in each of the three washes may be recycled.ALSO:NH3, H2 and HCN are removed from gases by washing the gases with an aqueous solution of pickling solution salt, i.e.FeSO4.7H2O, oxidizing part or all of the resulting liquid with a free -O2 containing gas, e.g. air, and further washing the gases with the oxidized liquid. In the first wash, which may be at 80 DEG C., (NH4)2.SO4 solution and solid FeS and Fe-CN complexes are formed. Oxidation of this solution may be effected, without separation of the solids, in upward concurrent flow at 70-100 DEG C. The effluent from the second wash may be used to give the crude gas, e.g. coke oven gas, a preliminary wash. Part of the solution in each of the three washes may be recycled. The final effluent consists of (NH4)2SO4 solution with solid S, FeS, Fe(OH)3, Fe-CN complexes, and possibly Fe2S3. It is filtered, and the solution evaporated to give solid (NH4)2SO4.
