Abstract

107,972. Asbury, D. F. Oct. 4, 1915, [Convention date]. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to screw type mechanism having an operating cam device interposed between the breech screw and the gun, and a controlling cam, shaped in conformity with the cam device. for ensuring harmonious movements of the breech mechanism. According to the invention, the controlling cam moves with the breech mechanism and engages with a roller on the gun. Fig. 1 shows a rear view of the breech with the screw in the closed and locked positions, and Fig. 4 shows a section en the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 with the parts in the positions they occupy when the breech screw B has been rotated fur unlocking. The breech is actuated by a fluid-pressure cylinder-and-piston device, the cylinder 33 of which is hinged to the gun, the piston 48 being, by means of its rod 46, connected to a cam member 25 fixed to the upper end of a shaft 14. This shaft rotates in the breech-screw carrier C and through the medium of a crank 15, pin 16, and sliding block 20, moves a link 18 to rotate the breech screw for locking and unlocking. When the breech screw is rotated for unlocking, cam devices M, N, Fig. 4, initiate the opening movement of the carrier, and a roller 31 carried by the gun engages with a cam-slot 26 in the member 25, shaped in harmony with the cams M, N to control the movements of the breech-actuating mechanism. The further movement of the piston 48 then causes the carrier to swing open, a latch 61 on the carrier being operated as described in Specification 107,973 to lock the member 25 against a stop 59 on the carrier, and the roller 31 moving in contact with the surface 29 of the slot 27. During the closing of the breech, these movements are reversed, the latch 61 being released as described in the above-mentioned Specification.
