Abstract

1,079,711. Extruding composite articles. INDUSTRIAL VINYLS Inc. Jan. 5, 1965, No. 374/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division E1] A flexible extruded article comprising a foamed synthetic resin base or core (13a), Fig. 5 (not shown), and a skin (13b) fused thereto, is particularly intended for use as a skirting board. The upstanding portion is firmly secured by adhesive to a wall and the forwardly extending portion is flexed against the floor such that a portion of the foamed core makes sealing contact with the floor along the length of the forwardly extending portion. Foamed synthetic resin as base material is extruded through channel 22 of a primary die 16 and is allowed to expand during movement through passage 32 of an auxiliary die 18 and to receive at the same time a coating of synthetic resin via a distributer comprising grooves 60, 62 in die 18 and co-operating grooves 52 and (54), Fig. 3 (not shown), in die 16. The coating material may be supplied from a second extrusion apparatus (not shown) and the base material (see below), is extruded at a temperature in the range 300-390‹ F., preferably 360‹ to 380‹ F., the dies being provided with band heaters 24, 34 which may be controlled independently. Upon extrusion, the extrudate passes through a cascade-type cooling unit (68), Fig. 1 (not shown), and thence into a water-filled tank (66), the distance (L) between the outlet of die (18) and the exit end of unit (68) preferably not exceeding 1 inch. Several examples of base material compositions are given, all of which include polyvinyl chloride and varying proportions of plasticizers, stabilizers, stearic acid, lead stearate and calcium carbonate as filler. Pigments may also be added and the blowing agents mentioned are N,N<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl- N,N<SP>1</SP> - dinitroso - tere - phthalamide and azobisformamide or azocarbonamide. The coating compositions are similar to the above, but without blowing agents. Other resins mentioned are polyvinyls, polyethylenes, polypropylenes and copolymers of the monomers thereof.
