Abstract

CaSO4. 1/2 H2O is obtained by purifying CaSO4.2H2O (obtained from Ca phosphate and H2SO4) by hydroseparation at a temperature of at least 45 DEG C., e.g. 60-90 DEG C., and then calcining. Purification may be effected by elutriating, e.g. using an upcurrent classifier, or in a hydrocyclone or continuous decanting centrifuge, in multistage if necessary. It is said to remove organic impurities, fine inorganic crystals, and gel-like components, and the Na2O content is preferably reduced to below 0.2%.
