Abstract
1,079,136. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. B.B.A. GROUP Ltd. March 8, 1966 [March 12, 1965], No. 10555/63. Heading B5K. [Also in Division F2] Textile belting or webbing is jointed by cutting a series of V-shaped notches across the full width of each of the two ends of the belting or webbing to be joined, lining the sides of the notches with solid fusible polyurethane, positioning the notched ends together in interengaging relation to cause the sides of the notches to butt up against the solid polyurethane, and fusing the joint between flat surfaces by the application of heat and pressure. The belt may be woven from yarns made of cotton, hair, flax, rayon, nylon or polyester fibres or combinations thereof and may be coated or impregnated with a dressing material. Preferably, the V-shaped notches are cut in such a manner that the ratio of notch length to width lies in the range 2 :1 to 30 : 1, e.g. 9 :1. The peaks of the notches may be rounded or squared. Before assembly with the polyurethane strips, the sides of the notches may be coated with a liquid adhesive primer, e.g. a solution of polyurethane in tetrahydrofuran. The polyurethane strips are of a thickness equal to that of the belt and of a width between <SP>1</SP>/ 64 inch and # inch. A thin sheet of the fusible solid polyurethane may be placed over the top and bottom surfaces of the belt prior to the fusing of the joint. Additional reinforcement of the joint may be provided by placing an open mesh fabric or scrim cloth, e.g. of nylon or polyester yarn, over the top and bottom surfaces of the joint either prior to the fusing of the joint or at a later stage. The joint may be assembled on a metal plate, covered with another plate and then placed in a press. Alternatively, the joint may be assembled directly on the bottom platen of the press. The platens of the press or the metal plates may be coated with a silicon release agent.
