Abstract

1,078,763. Annealing furnaces; air-cooling heat exchangers. WELLMAN INCANDESCENT FURNACE CO. Ltd. April 12, 1965 [May 23, 1964], No. 21385/64. Headings F4B and F4S. A coil annealing furnace comprises a base 10 below and spaced by upstanding blades 19 from an annular perforate work surface 11 situated above a central fan 12 driven by a motor 12a, and supporting via a sand seal an inner cover 15 of high thermal conductivity inside and spaced from a removable outer cover 16, with inlet and outlet ports 17 and 18, defining a passage for circulation of heated atmosphere. The blades 19 extend tangentially adjacent the fan and then radially of the fan axis towards the base periphery (Fig. 2), the space between the base 10 and the work surface 11 being bounded by an upstanding wall 20 defining an opening 21 through which atmosphere from inside cover 15 may be drawn by the fan. A helical heat exchange coil 22 is located between each radial blade part 19, the coils being connected in pairs by a header 25 inclined downwardly to each coil to facilitate draining. Water inlet 23 and outlet 24 pass in parallel fashion through the base 10 to further heat exchangers or cooling ponds. When annealing, hot atmosphere is circulated between covers 15, 16, thus heating workpieces inside cover 15 by conduction, temperature equilibration being achieved by atmosphere circulation inside cover 15 by fan 12. During cooling, cover 16 is removed and the atmosphere is circulated over the workpieces, through gap 21, radially in the passages between blade 19 to the fan 12 and axially over the coils to return to gap 21 and thence to the workpieces.
