Abstract

<PICT:1034729/C6-C7/1> A cooling system 26 for the atmosphere of a batch annealing furnace 10, of the single or multi stand type, having a refractory hearth 11, metal inner cover 18, supporting base 17 and circulating fan 32 comprises an outlet duct 42 connected to a tubular heat exchanger 48 and a return duct 43 containing separate fan means 51 and liquid coolant circulating means 55-67. In operation protective gas is supplied through pipe 25 to purge the furnace 10 and cooling system 26 out through line 27. Then during the heating and soaking cycles, the cooling system is isolated by shutting motorized butterfly valve 50, and the gas is recirculated up between the coils 65 and the cover 18 and down through central openings 31 by the fan 32 to pass out through the radial gaps formed by the plates 33, 35, 38 (Figs. 2, 3 not shown) constituting base 17. On commencement of the cooling cycle with outer cover 23 removed, valve 50 is opened and a portion of the gas is withdrawn through jacketed outflow duct 42, to pass via duct bend 47, to liquid cooled tubular heat exchanger 48 to return to admix with the other atmosphere through jacketed return duct 43, the degree of cooling being controlled by regulatng the water flow by valve means 56 in response to the water outlet temperature. After the initial cooling, axial fan 51 in return duct 43 is operated to positively circulate greater quantities of the atmosphere gas through cooling system 26. A drain and petcock are provided at the bottom of duct bend 47. In modifications, Figs. 7-10 (not shown) the axial fan in the cooling circuit is replaced by a centrifugal fan.
