A buckle mechanism for temporarily connecting a plurality of straps of a safety harness for example in motor vehicles to enable a person or persons to secure themselves either singly or as a pair in a speedy and inencumbered manner and then by pressing or striking a knob (not shown) to be released quickly, comprises a latching mechanism to which can be temporarily secured a plurality of buckle members 6 each connected to a said safety strap, the latching mechanism including a hollow housing 1 of cylindrical external shape a disc 8 arranged for sliding movement axially within the hollow interior of said housing said disc being circular except for a peripheral lug 11 which engages in a groove dispose axially of the housing in its otherwise cylindrical internal wall, said housing wall further having slots 4 through each of which an apertured ear part 5 of a said buckle member can be passed and said disc having a pin 9 disposed radially in line with each slot said pins being engageable in the apertures of the ear parts of the buckle members, the striker knob having a spigot 16 engaging in an aperture in the centre of said disc and said striker knob being depressable to cause the disc to move in one direction axially of said housing to bring its pins 9 out of engagement with said apertures of the ear parts and spring means 7 tending to urge said disc in the opposite direction axially of said housing. As shown the pins 9 have rounded surfaces which are engaged by tapered leading edges of the ear parts 5 to cause depression of the disc against the bias of the spring. Integrally formed with the closed bottom 2 of the housing is a buckle member 3 adapted to be attached to one of the harness straps.
