Abstract

Articles mounted on a conveyer are electrophoretically coated with organic coating material by passing the articles through a tank containing a coating bath comprising the organic coating material in an aqueous dispersing medium and passing D.C. between an electrode and an article immersed in the bath, the bath being separated from a flushing zone containing a flushing fluid by microporous wall through which dispersing medium but not coating material can flow so that the flow of flushing fluid removes some of the dispersing medium from the bath. As described either (a) the organic coating material includes a polymer with free carboxyl groups and the dispersing medium includes a water-soluble amine or ammonia or (b) the organic coating material includes a polymer with amine or quaternary ammonium groups and the dispersing medium includes a water-soluble carboxylic acid or buffered phosphoric acid. Paints so formulated are deposited at either the anode for (a) or the cathode for (b). Typically the microporous wall has pores of 100 to 10,000 A diameter and is formed of polystyrene polyvinyl chloride, sintered glass or ceramic. For use in coating with paints of types (a) and (b), the polymeric microporous wall may be ion-selective, containing free sulphuric acid groups or quaternary ammonium groups respectively. The porous wall dividing coating bath and flushing fluid may be one or more partition within the tank, may surround the electrode or the coating bath or may form a part of a filtration plant or define the central compartment of a three-compartment electrodialysis cell through which the coating bath is circulated externally of the coating cell.
