Abstract
1,077,876. Thermocouples. MULLARD Ltd. Dec. 6, 1965 [Feb. 3, 1965], No. 4794/65. Heading H1K. A thermocouple is mounted on a surface whose temperature is to be measured using an anodized aluminium member to provide the necessary electrical insulation. The member may take the form of a helix 3 which is slipped over the thermocouple wires 1, one end of the helix being placed between the wires to prevent relative movement. A braided nylon sleeve is placed over the assembly and twisted and stretched to tighten the helix. The sleeve is removed and epoxy resin 4 used to bond the assembly to the surface. The aluminium sleeve 3 of Figure 2 (not shown), is provided with a hole 6 to facilitate the flow of anodizing solution and later to enable the position of the thermocouple junction to be determined. The sleeve is provided before anodization with a machined or shaped surface to contact the test surface. For example, a sleeve may be pressed by rollers about an internal jig or may be extruded in D-shape. The thermocouple wires are held within the sleeve by injected epoxy resin and the sleeve bonded with loaded epoxy resin to the test surface. In a modification, the wires are held by a wedge placed within hole 6 until the adhesive is set and the sleeve is provided with a bent end (which may subsequently be removed) to act as a means for holding the sleeve against the surface until bonded thereto.
