Abstract

In the process for refining animal or vegetable oils as claimed in Specification 1,002,974, the hydrotrope used is a sulphone-free sulphonic acid salt. The sulphone-free sulphonate may be prepared by sulphonating an alkaryl hydrocarbon, quenching and neutralizing the product, and then extracting with ether, toluene or xylene by agitation or by counter-current extraction to remove the sulphones.
